I just finished East of Eden and am reading the Journal of a Novel. There’s something about this book, the lyrical writing, the depth of characterization, and the way each one’s strengths and weaknesses interact with the others. Then there are the themes of forgiveness, authenticity, loving the whole person. Plus all the embodying of the elements of the Genesis story, but molding it to reveal further truth. East of Eden is magnificent!

I checked it out from the library too and also needed to buy my own copy almost immediately (like ten pages in?) because I knew I needed to mark it up.
